A mutual fund pools money from many investors and invests it in a mix of stocks, bonds, or other securities, based on a stated objective. Instead of picking individual shares yourself, you buy units of the fund, and a professional fund manager decides where that pooled money goes.

The biggest advantage for a beginner is diversification. Spreading money across many securities, rather than one or two, reduces the impact of any single investment doing poorly. You also benefit from professional research and ongoing portfolio monitoring, which most individual investors don't have time to do themselves.

Mutual funds come in many types — equity funds, debt funds, hybrid funds, and more — each with a different risk and return profile. Starting out, it helps to pick a fund category that matches your goal, time horizon, and comfort with market ups and downs, rather than chasing whichever fund performed best last year.

Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks. Read all scheme-related documents carefully before investing, and consider speaking with an advisor about what fits your situation.
